Can music improve your sleep quality?
This study was a meta-analysis of 20 trials of music interventions for insomnia in adults over 18 years old. Insomnia was defined as sleep disturbance, including difficulty falling or remaining asleep and/or early morning awakenings.
Bottom line: Consider listening to relaxing music before bedtime to promote sleep health.
Study Takeaways:
In comparison to usual care, music with exercise, listening to music passively, and music-assisted relaxation had moderate effect sizes (-0.47, -0.61, -0.58 respectively) for improving sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
Only music-assisted relaxation was significantly more effective than usual care in improving overall sleep quality.
Listening to music before bedtime had a significant positive effect on reducing insomnia.
